Make Ahead Mashed Potatoes!

Make ahead Mashed Potatoes

You can make a large batch of mashed potatoes and freeze them so you have them available without the work!

I will say I’ve tried many recipes on Pinterest that have you make in the crockpot with chicken broth and add cream cheese. They are all ok. That’s it, OK.

Nothing beats plain old mashed potatoes.

I’ve done this several ways. From making a pot of mashed potatoes and freezing them to just boiling the potatoes then heating them up in the microwave. My favorite way is to completely make them so I don’t do anything but microwave the potatoes till the water cooks off. I say this because potatoes are mainly water. So no matter how you cook them they will have a lot of water just keep heating them till the water cooks off.

Everyone has their own way of making potatoes.

I just use Milk, Butter, and pepper. I try to cut salt anywhere I can so I don’t add any salt.

When making this batch of potatoes I used 2.5 # of potatoes

1 Stick Butter (1/2 cup)

1 cup milk

Pepper to taste

I peeled and boiled the potatoes till tender not mushy! Very important! you don’t want to overcook your potatoes!

Then I thoroughly drained them. Don’t let the potatoes sit in the hot water remove them immediately.

Why? Potatoes are a starchy vegetable. The longer they sit the starchier they will become!

I rinse out the pot that I boiled them in to remove any starch left on the sides of the pot. Then add the butter to the pot and allow to melt while the potatoes are draining. I don’t have the heat on I just let the butter sit in the warm pot and what melts, will melt. The Potatoes will completely melt it so don’t worry.

When the potatoes have drained thoroughly, no water dripping off the strainer.

Dump back into the pot.

Take the Potato masher pictured in the top picture, and mash away!

Now you may ask why the potato masher?

Why not just use an electric hand mixer?

Well, I’ll tell you!

You will over whip your potatoes!

This could cause them to be pasty.

I’m sure you know what I mean if you have ever had over whipped potatoes!

If you need more milk add it then pepper to taste.

That’s it!

Put them into containers and freeze them.

Pull out a container and heat it up in the microwave for dinner! Now, like I mentioned earlier they can be watery when reheating them. Don’t fret! Just keep on stirring, stirring, stirring. Ok, bad pun but you gotta love Dory! Keep adding time in the microwave till you have the consistency you like.

I usually cook from frozen 5 mins. stir, another 5 mins. stir. Usually, it’s pretty close to done. But it depends on the amount you are reheating.

I hope you try and make ahead mashed potatoes some time! It really is a great side to have in the freezer for that last minute if you need it!

Buy potatoes when they are on sale. Make a huge pot up. In one day you can have your mashed potatoes done for the month!
